BALTIMORE - Chad McCoy had the game-winning hit in the first game and Eric Kempton had control of the second game from the mound as the Allegany College of Maryland Trojans swept a doubleheader from Community College of Baltimore County-Essex Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans won the first game 5-4 on McCoy's eighth-inning hit, scoring Matt Gruber with the game-winning run, and cruised behind Kempton for a 9-2 victory in the second game.
Allegany led 4-1 after three innings before Essex scored three times, once in the fourth inning and twice in the sixth, to tie the game and force extra innings.
Cody Young was the Trojans' leading hitter, going 4-for-5 with a third inning solo home run. He also stole a base and had an RBI. Gruber had two hits, Jerry Lloyd belted a double and had two RBIs and Kempton had three hits, including two doubles and an RBI.
Essex was led by Alex Clatterbuck's three hits and Jeff Biehy's two hits.
John Byrum came on the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded and forced a ground out to end the inning. He shut Essex down the rest of the way to pick up the win, improving to 4-2.
In the second game, Kempton scattered seven hits with four strikeouts to improve his record to 5-1.
The Trojans scored nine runs off of 10 hits. Lloyd again doubled and had two RBIs. Lee Bainbridge scored twice and had two hits and Gruber had three hits and drove in three runs, including a two-run single in the third and an RBI in the seventh.
Allegany (28-16 overall, 16-7 Maryland JUCO and 9-4 Division II) hosts Hagerstown Tuesday at 3 p.m. It will play College of Southern Maryland Saturday in a playin game.
