CUMBERLAND - Mark Oxendine's three-run home run and Justin Mika's two-hitter were too much for the Allegany College of Maryland to overcome as Southern Maryland shut out the Trojans in their Region XX play-in game Sunday morning at The Rock.
The Trojans, winners of nine of their last 12 games and 2-0 against Southern Maryland during the regular season, went cold at the wrong time.
Mika had four strike outs and allowed five walks in his complete-game two-hitter. The Trojans, however, left eight men on base including having the bases loaded in the eighth inning. The only hits were singles by Lee Bainbridge in the fourth-inning and Drew Suttmiller in the ninth inning.
Southern Maryland scored on Kevin Mullins RBI in the first inning and Oxendine's three-run blast in the second inning. It added a run off of a sixth inning sacrifice fly that scored Joe Sagarino.
The Hawks finished with eight hits and chased Tyler Ramaley (4-2) in the second inning. He was relieved by Ryan MacNamara, who had eight strikeouts.
Frederick won the second game, defeating Dundalk 11-3 in eight innings. The third game of the play-in day was postponed due to rain.
Allegany finishes the season 28-18.
