Potomac State's Healey, Fike earn All-American honors

For the Cumberland Times-News

KEYSER, W.Va. - Potomac State infielder Jacke Healey and pitcher Nathan Fike were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American teams, with Healey named to the second team and Fike to the third team.

This year's selections mark the seventh straight season that Potomac State has had a player earn All-American honors. Ten Catamounts have earned All-American honors since 2000.

Healey, who will be playing next season at Youngstown (Ohio) State University, hit .456 with 11 home runs and 15 doubles and had a slugging percentage of .823.

The Tunkhannock, Pa., native had already been named the Eastern District Rawlings Big Stick Award winner for 2008 as he had the highest batting average in the district. The slick-fielding shortstop also stole nine bases and had 67 hits on the year.

Fike, a sophomore left-hander, led all Potomac State pitchers with seven wins this season and a 1.72 earned run average.

Fike struck out 70 while walking just 18 in 57 2/3 innings of work, and opposing hitters managed just a .192 average against the hard-throwing lefty. Fike is anticipating the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, which begins today. He expects to be a mid-round pick and has had frequent contact with professional teams throughout the season.

Last season Joe Agreste, who was third-team All-Big East this season at West Virginia University, was a second-team NJCAA All-American. Two years ago, right-handed pitcher Enrique Garcia, now pitching for the top-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes, was a second-team JUCO All-American.

Other Catamounts to earn All-American honors since 2000 were J.T. Osburn in 2005, Jeff Miller in 2004, Justin Jenkins in 2003, Drew Jackson and Morgan Clendenin in 2002, and Jake Ellifritz, 2000.
