Frostburg wins two in Snowbird Tournament

For the Cumberland Times-News

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Kelly Callan tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the first game while Brooke Tapman went 4-for-4 in the second, leading Frostburg State to wins over Mitchell College and Mount Aloysius on Thursday, the final day of the Snowbird Softball Tournament.

The Bobcats added to their early-season home run count by clubbing three more. Now with 10 in 12 games, this year's team is already tied for second in school history and needs only two more to break the school record of 11 set in 2006.

Callan's no-hitter came in an 8-0 victory over Mitchell. A freshman, Callan struck out four and walked only one in getting her second win of the season.

The Bobcats took control of the game with a six-run fifth.

Amanda Baldwin smashed her team-leading fifth home run, a two-run shot. The homer came in her only official plate appearance, as she finished 1-for-1 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Lindsay Freitag was 2-for-4 and Meghan Dabkowski, Lindsay Seal, Kathryn Claeys and Victoria Krichbaum had RBI singles.

In the second game, FSU led Mount Aloysius 2-1 for much of the way until scoring six runs in the sixth inning in an 8-1 win. The Bobcats finished with 14 hits while the Mounties managed only one run on 10 hits.

Katelyn Coffey picked up her third consecutive win by pitching all seven innings and striking out 11.

Tapman's perfect day at the plate included her second homer of the tournament, a triple, two singles and two runs scored.

Kaitlyn Wagner was 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and a run scored, while Callan was 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Samantha Quirin homered and Coffey hit a three-run double.

Frostburg State (6-6) plays Friday, March 28, at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) at 3 p.m.
