Wright powers PSC to sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Potomac State College and Jefferson Community College combined for 42 runs and 57 hits, but it was two home runs by Brittany Wright that led to one-run wins for the Cats as they now sport a 4-2 mark during the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle Beach.
Wright boasted some extra-inning heroics in the first game, a 7-6 win, by hitting a two-run home run in the ninth inning. Wright, who added a single, would finish the day with eight runs batted in. Ashley Sites followed up Wright with a run-scoring double.
The Cats would need the runs as Jefferson scored two and had a runner on second before Ashley Metcalfe picked up her 16th strikeout to end the game. Metcalfe had four strikeouts over the last two innings.
Michelle Cain finished with a double and two singles, and Ashley Conners hit a double and a single.
Potomac State got out to a 7-3 lead after the second inning of the second game, but Jefferson scored eight times in the third and added two more runs in the fifth to take a 13-7 lead. The Catamounts struck back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, and then Wright hit a two-run homer in the sixth as Potomac took a 15-13 lead into the seventh. The Cats would win 15-14.
Wright would drive in six runs with two singles added to her homer. Michelle Cain hit a solo home run in the second inning, and Sites finished with four hits, including a double. Metcalfe hit a double and two singles.
Metcalfe returned to earn the win in the second game as well, retiring the final two batters by strikeout.
Stacey Finley led Jefferson with a triple, a double and a single.
The Cats (8-6) will play Clark State today in a 9 a.m. doubleheader.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Potomac State couldn't get past the big inning as the College of DuPage (Ill.) used three of them to sweep the Catamounts in the Snowbird Classic at Myrtle Beach.
Three Potomac State players went deep in the opening game, including a two-run home run in the top of the seventh from Morgan Shockey that got the score to 9-8. The Catamounts then loaded the bases, but left them stranded.
Shockey added a single, while Brittany Wright and Ashley Metcalfe also homered. Metcalfe hit a solo shot in the second inning and added a double and a single, and Wright got a three-run home run in the third.
DuPage score two runs in the first two innings, but PSC took a 5-4 lead in the third. The Chaparals scored five times in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Danielle Curlyo finished 3-for-3 with a homer and two singles.
The Catamounts lost Lindsey Twigg for at least the remainder of the week with an ankle sprain. The sophomore pitcher/infielder went down in the fifth inning.
Lindsay Payne scattered five PSC hits to earn the shutout in the second game. DuPage scored five runs in the second and added four more in the third. Lauren Schramm led the Chaparals with a home run and a single.
Shockey and Jen Shuke doubled, and Ashley Sites hit two singles for Potomac State.
