Potomac State splits two, finishes spring trip 7-3

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Potomac State finished its week in the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle Beach by sitting through a blowout loss, and then winning one of their own to end its spring trip 7-3.

The Catamounts played two five-inning contests, winding up on the losing end of a 17-3 game with West Virginia State before blowing out Clark State (Ohio) 16-4 in the nightcap.

The Cats pounded 17 hits to score its 16 runs in the win over the Eagles. Clark State took a 4-0 lead with four unearned runs in the first, but Potomac State scored three runs in the second. Neither team scored in the third, but the Cats blew up for nine runs in the fourth to put the score out of reach. PSC ensured the shorted game by tacking on four more runs in the fifth.

Brittany Wright clocked four doubles to bring in a total of five runs. Potomac State also got a double and two singles from Samantha Patton and Ashley Conners.

Lindsey Twigg earned the win pitching for the first time since hurting her ankle on the second day of the classic.

Darcie Muncy hit two singles for the Eagles.

In Thursday's opener, West Virginia State broke a scoreless tie by scoring seven runs, all unearned, in the third inning. Potomac State had two outs in the third before making two errors that led to the seven runs. The Yellow Jackets carried the momentum into the following innings by scoring four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Jessica Hamilton led the West Virginia State offense with two deep balls, including a grand slam, and a total of six RBIs. Jessica Osborne also hit a home run, while Chari Small and Jenni Fowlkes each had a double and a single.

Wright had three RBIs and one single for the Cats.

PSC (11-7) plays a doubleheader at home on Sunday, noon, against CCBC Dundalk.
