Frostburg loses in seventh

Tapman ends record year with 15 homers

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

DALLAS, Pa. — Brooke Tapman hit her 15th home run of the season but it wasn’t enough as Frostburg State surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost Misericordia, 4-3, in the ECAC South Championships on Wednesday.

It was the second trip to the ECAC Tournament in school history for Frostburg State. The only other trip, in 2004, also ended in a loss to Misericordia, by 6-2.

Tapman’s homer gave the Bobcats (26-17) a quick 2-0 lead, and Frostburg was up 3-1 in the fourth when Tapman singled and scored on a groundout by Megan Magee.

Misericordia (26-17), the defending ECAC South champion, got to within 3-2 on an RBI single by Gina Urbon in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Hollie Sarnak smacked a two-run single, knocking in the tying and winning runs.

Frostburg managed only two hits off two Misericordia pitchers. Tapman had both hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Magee suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs and striking out nine.

Baseball drops regular-season finale

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Jim Pasquine and Tyler Kaido homered as Washington & Jefferson defeated Frostburg State, 5-3, in the Bobcats’ regular-season finale on Tuesday.

Kaido hit a solo homer in the sixth, and Washington & Jefferson (29-13) took a 5-1 lead into the ninth when FSU (24-13) attempted a comeback, getting to within 5-3 on a two-out, two-run doube by Joe Garrity. A walk to Doug Anuszewski brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but reliever Mitch McClay got Joe Clark to fly out to end the game.

Sapp and Mike Jester doubled and singled to lead FSU. Greg Beachy (5-3) allowed two runs in 2 2-3 innings and suffered the loss.

The AMCC tournament begins Friday at Penn State Behrend. Frostburg plays No. 3 Penn State Altoona in the opening game at 9 a.m.
