ACCIDENT — Garrett County’s High School Robotics Team 1629, GaCo, will celebrate the National Hour of Code Week by hosting its ninth annual First Lego League qualification tournament Dec. 9 at Northern Garrett High School.
The 23 teams from Garrett and Allegany counties will compete for top spots to advance to the Maryland State FLL Championship.
The tournament is free and open to the public.
The teams will participate in practice matches starting at 9 a.m. Official rounds will begin after the opening ceremony at 12:15 p.m. Teams will compete with their EV3 Lego robots that are preprogrammed by them to perform challenge missions autonomously on a 4-by-8-foot playing field.
Challenge missions are based on the theme “Hydro Dynamics,” which focuses on the human water cycle, how we use water, how it’s delivered to us and how we dispose of it.
In addition to competing with their robots, teams will be judged on a research project presented to a panel of judges on a solution they have found to a problem related to the challenge theme and how well teams understand and practice FLL core values.
Official rounds should conclude by 2:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony to follow.
