FREDERICK — Fort Hill’s Jessica Currence played her way to a second-place finish in the Class 1A West Region tennis tournament, earning a spot in the Maryland State Tournament next week at College Park.

Currence advanced to the region finals by beating Middletown’s Kate Smith 6-0 and 6-1 in the semifinals. Carolina Rodzyminska, of Tuscarora, defeated Currence 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

Fort Hill’s Allie Stevens reached the semifinals before being ousted by Rodzyminska 6-2, 6-1. By making the semifinals Stevens earned a spot in the State Tournament as an alternate.

Fort Hill’s doubles team of Tasha Dunlap and Rebecca Price lost to eventual champions Sarah Dice and Amanda Jenkins of Clear Spring in the semifinal round, 6-0, 6-1.

The Mountain Ridge boys doubles team of Eric Williams and David Hobel advanced to the semifinal round before losing to Zach Butt and Charlie Leonard of Walkersville by scores of 7-5 and 6-2.

Currence will play Friday at the College Park Tennis Center, at 10 a.m. The first two rounds will be played Friday. Should she advance to the semifinals, she would play again on Saturday.
