Find a church with basics of worshipping, love for one another

David Sandvick, Columnist

There's been a lot of buzz lately about the new "I-Phone." This new cell phone also stores your music and pictures while also letting you watch movies.

All of this is meaningless to someone like me who can barely make a phone call with my phone. I suppose all this breakthrough technology is fine and good, but little of it seems to benefit me. So I've come up with some ideas of my own for new or modified devices that I would be interested in purchasing if available.

Let's begin with the air conditioned riding mower. You could mow during the hottest part of the day and be perfectly comfortable I'd also like to see someone develop the self-cleaning microwave oven. I'm surprised no one has done that yet because I think it would really sell. And rather than another video game I don't understand, how about a book marker that I can't lose or a calendar that automatically flips to the next day and month. What I really need is a washing machine that is also the dryer, thus eliminating the need to switch loads.

I sometimes hear people talking about their church. They say it has fast music, fancy computer graphics and a program to meet everyone's needs. But, for me, the issue isn't which church has the most powerful computer interface networking capabilities, but does it make me feel wanted, needed and known. Give me a church that loves me and my children and I'll think that's about the best church in town.

Oh, I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes it simply comes down to the basics of worshipping God and loving each other. I believe people want to be part of a bigger family and God has provided for that need through his church. Find a church family that best suits you and become active in it.

As for what I really need...give me a pair of shoes that last longer than the shoe-strings.

David Sandvick is the pastor of First English Baptist Church in Frostburg.
