CUMBERLAND — Lucas Owens and Marisa Bowen danced their way to victory performing the swing to “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” during the first Dancing with the Local Stars competition.

A sold-out crowd of more than 180 people supported the weekend event at Windsor Hall to raise money for the Family Crisis Resource Center with the assistance of the 2009 Class of Leadership Allegany!

The evening featured a wide range of dances by several local star couples, including Sharon and Bill Cihlar, Bruce and Dennise Exstrom, Jim Cumiskey and Alice Harman, Helen and Mike Hutt, Tanya and Tony Ottaviani, Kathy and Romulo Villanueva and Fanny and Ken Witmer.

The dancers volunteered numerous hours to rehearse for the event. Local choreographers who helped with the dance routines included Kelli Allaway, Crista Cave-Gomer, Josie Lachica, Nancy Lepley, Lucia Manoukian and Desiree Witt.

Joe Harman of WTBO-WKGO radio served as master of ceremonies. Audience members were given a gold coin to cast their vote for the couple they felt performed best.

Dancing with the Local Stars generated nearly $15,000 that will go toward services and clients of the Family Crisis Resource Center. The center provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and sex crimes, including a 24-hour help line, a shelter, individual and group counseling, advocacy and accompaniment, supervised visitation, an Abuse Intervention Program and community education. For the past several years, the center has also served as an advocate for the homeless population in Allegany County.
