Think about relationship with God in ’08

David Sandvick, Columnist

It’s that time of year again. The time when many of us make meaningless resolutions to exercise, eat right and lose some weight. Now, don’t get me wrong, those are all admirable decisions to make and to live by, it’s just that not many have the will power to make those life changes.

To my way of thinking, something more manageable than giving up Twinkies might be to attend church more regularly. Or perhaps, we might decide to really pray for our friends and family. We may even decide to serve God through a local church.

Although I may joke about it, I do want us to be as physically healthy as possible, but I also want us to be as spiritually healthy as possible. I encourage you to think about your relationship with God and how you might improve it this coming new year. And now, just for fun, I submit this little ditty from the back of my brain.

‘Twas the night before New Years as I searched through the house, for the last little piece of chocolate Mickey Mouse. My resolutions were hung on the fridge with great care, hoping Jenny Craig would soon see them there. I settled my tummy with one last root beer float, letting it glide slowly down the back of my throat. Could I make a whole year without gooey sweets? Could I really enjoy just vegetables and beets? All this thinking brought sleep and very sweet dreams, of sugar plums dancing and cookies with crèmes. When out in the yard there arose such a clatter, I sat bolt upright spilling my bowl of cake batter! I ran to the window and what did I see? Richard Simmons holding a cherries jubilee. He handed me the bowl and a large shiny spoon, then up, up, he went in a hot-air balloon. As he drifted away, I heard loud and clear, “Eat all you want and have a Happy New Year!”

David Sandvick is the pastor of First English Baptist Church in Frostburg.
