Cresaptown Elementary one of state's top schools

Cresaptown Elementary is one of the best schools in Maryland. The Blue Ribbon proves it.

Out of 860 elementary schools in Maryland, Cresaptown was one of only six to receive the state's Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award - the first ever earned by a school in Allegany County.

How does a school become a Blue Ribbon School?

One way is to have 88 percent of its fifth graders score at or above the reading proficiency level and 92 percent above proficiency level in mathematics ... and this comes at a time when there is growing concern about the level of reading and mathematical skills in the nation's schools.

Also, the school repeatedly receives honors in other areas, including positive behavior intervention and supports and character education.

Its students collect food for the Salvation Army, and it has had three Allegany County Teachers of the Year.

More than a Blue Ribbon goes with the recognition; more than $70,000 in cash, books and equipment were donated by area businesses ... and the students will be able to celebrate at a pizza party.

State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick, who presented the award, said she hopes to return later this year for another celebration after the U.S. Department of Education presents its National Blue Ribbon awards.

We wouldn't be surprised if that happens. Good things are happening at Cresaptown Elementary School.
