Teen drivers

AAA offers tips for keeping insurance rates lower

Cumberland Times-News

Getting a driver's license is a rite of passage for most kids, and a wallet-draining exercise for parents, who often see their insurance rates skyrocket when a new driver is added to their policy.

AAA Mid-Atlantic offered the following tips to help keep insurance premiums down for younger drivers:

* Require your teen to keep a clean driving record. Don't hesitate to provide additional behind-the-wheel training even after the new driver receives their license.

* Good grades count. Let your insurance company know if your child has a B or better GPA. Many insurers offer good-student discounts, ranging from 5-10 percent.

* Steer clear of sports cars. Buying a teenager a sedan instead of a sports car will not only keep your rates low, but will provide the young driver with less temptation to speed and show off.

* Assign only one car. Ask your insurance agent if you can assign your teen driver to just one car in the family, usually the least expensive one.

* Consider different coverage. If your teen is driving an older vehicle, consider lowering or eliminating the comprehensive and collision coverage, and increasing the deductible.

* Set the rules. Parents should be familiar with their state's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws and enforce them through every stage.

* Set a good example. Start watching your own driving long before your children get their license and you'll have a much easier time convincing them to be safe drivers.
