Halloween Parade keeps tradition alive in city

Cumberland Times-News

It used to be that there were several parades throughout the year in Cumberland and Allegany County. But in recent years, events like the annual Dapper Dan Memorial Day parade and the Allegany County homecoming parade have disappeared.

But one parade that has been on the scene since 1949 is the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association’s Halloween Parade. It is still going strong, and last year it saw more than 100 groups participate before thousands of spectators. The mummers contest, which is held prior to the parade, drew 185 children ages 18 and younger.

To participate in the 2009 parade, applications must be received by Saturday. The parade will begin on East First Street and continue down Virginia Avenue, ending on West Industrial Boulevard near Kirk Auto Sales.

Marsha Thomas, parade chairwoman who has been involved in the parade since the 1970s, said she is expecting to see new people enter this year’s event.

This year’s parade will be held Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. Applications or information can be obtained by calling Thomas at (301) 722-6070.

The South Cumberland business group is to be commended for continuing the Halloween Parade tradition. It is a wholesome family event that enlivens each year’s fall season.
