Fall cleanup

Habitat for Humanity seeking volunteers

Cumberland Times-News

The Allegany County Habitat for Humanity is only in its infancy, but already it is making a contribution to the community.

The Christian-based organization, which assists individuals and families who need help building a home, received its official affiliate status in August and has been moving forward with recruiting board members and volunteers.

On Saturday, the group will hold a Fall Clean-Up Day to help residents who are unable to care for their properties. At the same time, the event will help in the group’s effort to raise $90,000 for its initial home-building project.

Volunteers for the clean-up are asked to meet at 8 a.m. at Long & Foster, 200 S. George Street, Lunch will be served to all volunteers..

Project coordinators are looking for volunteers to provide the event manpower and transport workers (must be at least 21 with valid driver’s license). Participants need to obtain sponsors to donate an amount of money for every hour that is worked or a flat-fee pledge. Donations are to be turned in the day of the event.

The community is also asked to donate supplies such as rakes, brooms, garbage bags and gardening gloves, and refer yards that need maintenance work because the resident cannot physically do the work.

Volunteers will be given the site’s location and time of day to work in advance and can receive credit for community service hours completed.

To participate or for more information, contact Debbie Grimm, Fundraising Committee chair, at (301) 722-4700 or Deborah.Grimm@Longandfoster.com. For information about Habitat for Humanity, log on to www.habitat.org.
