Frostburg Fire Dept. marks 135th anniversary

Cumberland Times-News

— The Frostburg Fire Department’s story is one that’s worth telling, and the Maryland Fire Dispatch magazine did so in this month’s issue.

The occasion was the 135th anniversary of the department’s founding on Dec. 9, 1878. The magazine is distributed primarily to the fire service industry in the mid-Atlantic region.

Frostburg’s firefighters have a long and proud tradition. The city’s downtown has been ravaged numerous times by massive fires, including one that was started years ago by a runaway tractor-trailer.

Each time, the Mountain City firefighters have responded as first-rate professionals.

The department’s 90 members — 55 of whom are active riding members — have a primary coverage area of 15 square miles and a population of more than 15,000. That includes more than 5,000 students, faculty and other staff at Frostburg State University. They also assist other fire and rescue squads in Allegany and eastern Garrett counties.

Some of those firefighters are second- and third-generation members ... all volunteers since the department’s founding. “Our Deeds Our Reward” is the department’s motto.

The department’s website,, says its members have given meaning to those words. Read the department’s chronological history that appears on the website, and you’ll see why its tradition is such a rich one.
