Do we need it?

Survey to check desire for commuter air service

Can commercial air service in to and out of the Greater Cumberland Airport ever make a comeback?

That question is the basis for a survey by a Frostburg State University student who is hoping Cumberland Times-News readers will give him their input on the issue.

Christopher Cropper, a junior at FSU, is conducting the survey as part of his course studies. The five-question survey is attempting to guage whether there is an interest in having air service to and from Cumberland from either Baltimore, Pittsburgh or Washington.

The airport has not had commercial service from a major airline since US Airways Express carrier Air Midwest left in September 2001. A brief experiment with air service between Cumberland and Hagerstown by Boston-Maine Airways was tried shortly after that but was quickly abandoned.

Cropper, who is a geography major at FSU, said he has an interest in travel and that spurred him to do a feasibility study on the local airport commuter service. “I feel there is a need for an airline service to and from the Baltimore/D.C. region, not only for the tourism industry, but also for Allegany County’s business community,” Cropper said.

We urge readers to take a few minutes to visit our website at www.times-news.com and click on the local airport commuter service button to take the survey. We’ll publish the results when the survey is complete.

This hasn’t stopped some people from saying they know the answer to these questions and others from trying to find out for themselves, or simply arguing about it.
