Local airport is bi-state airport, not a West Virginia airport

The headline to  “W.Va. airport authority fills vacant spots” on April 1 (Page 1A) was misleading as the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport is not a West Virginia-only airfield.

Had your headline writer researched a bit, it would have been noted that the airport is under control of the Potomac Highlands Airport Authority as required by a bi-state commission (established by law under both Maryland and West Virginia legislatures) and therefore is a bi-state airport, not a West Virginia airport.

This has been in existence for years. Previously the airport was owned by the City of Cumberland at its construction in the mid-1940’s and was known as the Cumberland Municipal Airport. Later it was under control of the Allegany Commissioners (Maryland) before the formation of the PHAA.

It is noteworthy and appreciated that the PHAA has finally disallowed airport employees to be a voting member of the authority, a position I and others have held for years.
