County fair, ag expo kicks off tomorro

Cumberland Times-News

— The Allegany County Fair and Agriculture Expo will get under way tomorrow, once again promising to be a fun and educational event that the entire family can enjoy.

Held at the county fairgrounds off McMullen Highway, the fair will kick off wth rides at 3 p.m. Saturday and a mud bog at 7 p.m.

About 40,000 people attend the fair and ag expo every summer. In addition to the array of livestock and agriculture exhibits, the Reithoffer Shows on the Midway and grandstand entertainment continue to be a popular draw.

Daily events include Laura Herriott’s Animal Tales, Denny Huber Magician and Balloon Artist, Jerry Brown’s Strolling Variety Show, fire and rescue demonstrations, a model railroad display and, when weather permits, hang-gliding demonstrations. Fireworks will be seen Monday at 10:30 p.m. and Friday at 10:45 p.m.

The Reithoffer rides will feature the Stinger and Wild Mouse, two state fair or amusement park style-rides that were at a fair in Brockton, Mass., last week. After their appearance in Allegany County, the rides will be featured at the West Virginia State Fair.

Another highlight this year will be a more spectacular Ferris wheel. About $80,000 of new LED lights have been added to this year’s wheel.

Livestock will begin arriving at the fairgrounds Saturday. On Sunday, various agricultural displays will go up in the multipurpose building.

A complete schedule of fair events, as well as various feature stories, will appear in a special fair and ag expo section as part of the Saturday edition of the Times-News.
