Get ready

Disasters will happen; we should be prepared

Cumberland Times-News

— “Be Prepared” is the Boy Scouts of America’s motto, and it would serve all of us equally.

September is National Preparedness Month, and Allegany County’s government is urging its citizens to develop a disaster preparation plan for themselves and their families.

It’s not like we haven’t needed one.

Last year, Allegany County and its neighbors took a thrashing from Hurricane Sandy and a derecho — which was a word few people had heard until one of them arrived here with high winds and heavy thunderstorms.

Our area is also no stranger to floods, fires and even tornadoes.

Natural disasters are going to happen. Being ready for them will make life simpler when they do.

Last week’s plan involved staying informed. If you are a parent of school-age children, know about the children’s school emergency plans. Jobholders should know how their employers will react to emergencies.

This week’s emphasis on preparedness involves creation of a family or individual emergency plan. Next week’s focus will be on making an emergency kit, and the following week will concentrate on supporting our first responders.

Information on all of these are available on the Allegany County web page at: http:// gov.allconet.org/.

“Be Prepared” is a good idea, and it works.
