Flower box project successful beyond people’s expectations

To the Editor:

— Last August, downtown manager Ed Mullaney returned from a trip to Ireland full of enthusiasm for the beautification potential of containers of blooming flowers.

Some of us questioned his enthusiasm: it seemed to be be very late in the Maryland growing season to be planting containers.

Nevertheless, Ed persevered in his vision of a mall filled with flowers; and within days of his return, large containers of flowers appeared along downtown streets. The flowers thrived and were spectacular well into fall.

This summer, the flower box project began in early summer and has been expanded. The flowers are at their peak now. As a recent letter-to-the-editor demonstrated, visitors to the city rave about the flowers downtown.

But this is only possible because Ed deploys a small army of volunteers and community service workers daily to keep the planters watered. He has also been creative in finding sources for the flowers, the large containers, etc.

A special “Thank you” to Ed Mullaney for having the vision, and for all the work that has gone into the flower box project.
