University student opening doors of technology to Frostburg seniors

Jennifer Raley

Frostburg State University student Nick Arnone has opened the doors of technology for a group of senior citizens at Frostburg Heights Apartments.

Computer components, e-mail accounts, word processing programs and eBay auctions are among the topics Arnone has taught to his class of enthusiastic seniors.

“It’s fun to be able to answer questions and solve problems,” said Arnone, a liberal studies major who will graduate this month.

Arnone is writing a paper about senior citizens and their relationships to computer technology for an independent study course while completing an internship at the Frostburg Senior Center.

Marty Cotton, a resident at Frostburg Heights, met Arnone at the senior center and told him that several residents were interested in learning how to use the computer that was purchased for the building occupants last fall.

“We had a group here who wanted to know how to use the computer,” said Cotton.

Arnone was more than happy to offer assistance.

“Everyone has been very eager to learn,” said Arnone, who has taught four two-hour classes so far.

On Tuesday afternoon, Arnone explained how to create documents on Microsoft Word, how to locate items on eBay and how to determine a Web site’s credibility.

“I like all the information that’s available on the Internet,” said Cotton, who has learned how to e-mail relatives and look up recipes.

Alta Piercy, who is planning to get a computer of her own, has learned a lot from Arnone.

“It gets easier the more you do it,” said Piercy, who also enjoys looking up recipes and sending e-mail.

“It shows that you can learn at any age,” said Virginia Miller.

Checking e-mail and playing solitaire are John Thomas’ favorite computer activities.

Jean Beeman, who has previous computer experience, said Arnone’s class has been a great refresher, and she has learned many new things as well.

Arnone created study guides to aid the participants in their future technological endeavors. He said he has thoroughly enjoyed working with his computer group and is considering seeking employment at a senior center after graduation.
