CUMBERLAND - Interesting bits of history from North End, West Side, East Side, South End and downtown are included in Allegany High School's 10th oral history book, "Cumberland: A Hometown History."
"I think the book will bring back many fond memories for readers," said Robert Reinhard, a senior who served as the book's graphic designer. "It flows smoothly, but at the same time you can jump from section to section."
Students in Brian White's historical methods class researched the history of the city and conducted interviews with more than 75 community members. This year, 33 students worked to produce the 188-page book that features 200 historical photographs.
In addition to information about businesses, schools churches and other landmarks located within each part of the city, the book also features sections on floods, city government, the police and fire departments, street cars, the Jewish community and urban renewal.
Social studies teacher Wesley Cooper joined White in the project.
"I learned about the process of making a book, and I'm not from the area, so I learned a lot about the history of Cumberland," said Cooper.
A book signing will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Allegany High School Library. Books will cost $15 at the signing. Afterward, books will be available at the school and The Book Center.
Proceeds will be used to fund next year's book project. Copies of recent publications also are available by contacting White at (301) 777-8110.
Allegany High School's oral history program has been recognized by various groups and individuals over the past decade, including the Print and Media Award, State of Maryland International Reading Association Council and Nancy Grasmick, state superintendent of schools, classroom visit of recognition, both in 2007.
