World Of Worms

Braddock Middle School sixth-graders learn about crawling creatures

CUMBERLAND - Braddock Middle School sixth-grade students in Amanda Nash's class had a spectacular time exploring the wonderful world of worms Tuesday.

"I like making the wormeries because you can see how they make tunnels through the dirt," said Quint Thayer.

"I like touching the worms and learning about the environment," added Austin Groves.

Building wormeries is one of the many activities taking place this week as part of the sixth-grade interdisciplinary unit.

"They are participating in a lot of hands-on activities like making wormeries," said Nash, an earth science teacher.

"Today we are going to Green Ridge to help pick up trash - it's good to learn about the Earth, so we know how to help it," said Sarah Miller.

"Tomorrow we are making recycled paper, and upstairs we're learning about owls and how we need to protect the animals," said Anna Zambreny.

Thayer is particularly excited about the weeklong unit.

"I really like it because I want to go into a career with the state parks, and it helps to learn this stuff at a young age," he said.
