Eastern sets courses

MOOREFIELD — A variety of courses have been scheduled by Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College. They include:

Recent graduates and other job-seekers can improve their resume tools and interviewing skills in two Petersburg workshops offered through Community Connections: “Resume Writing,” and “Interviewing Techniques & Tips.”

Space is limited for both workshops. To register, and for more information, call Lacey Ball at 434-8000, or toll free: (877) 982-2322.

“Resume Writing” will meet Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., in Eastern’s access center at the South Branch Career and Technical Center. “Interviewing Techniques & Tips” will meet Oct. 29, also from 6 to 8 p.m., also at Eastern’s Petersburg access center.

In “Resume Writing,” John Holmes, a Career Development Consultant with RESA VIII, will use a PowerPoint presentation to “go over some tools necessary to create a quality resume,” he said. And he invites participants who already have a current résumé to bring it along, “because this workshop will show them how to enhance what they might already have.”

Holmes will discuss different styles and formats for résumés, and how to use the document to focus an employer on one’s specific past accomplishments. “Because that’s what hiring managers like to see,” he said.

Along with resumes, the workshop will explore how to write effective cover letters and professional thank-you notes. “And I’ll have hand-outs,” Holmes said, “so there will be plenty of information for students to take home with them.”

“Interviewing Techniques & Tips” will explore the top 10 questions interviewers like to ask, and how to give effective answers. Holmes will also discuss how to prepare for the different types of interviews job-seekers might encounter.

For learners interested in starting a career in pharmacy, Eastern will offer a Pharmacy Technician Certification Program this fall in Romney. The eight week, 50-hour program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s exam.

Classes will meet Monday and Wednesday evenings, from Oct. 6 through Nov. 24, at Eastern’s access center in Hampshire High School.

Space is limited. To register, and for more information, call Amy Crites at 434-8000, or toll free: (877) 982-2322.

The course will cover medical terminology and other systems specific to pharmacy, including brand name and generic drugs, the metric system, inventory control, billing and insurance reimbursement. Students will learn how to read, interpret and dispense prescriptions; how to calculate dosages and I.V. flow rates; and how to compound medications and handle sterile products.

Beginners who wish to learn the ancient, practical and decorative skill of basket weaving can join Martha McCourt’s Fall Bucket four-hour evening workshop, Oct. 16 in Moorefield.

Learning weavers will make a decorative basket with a four-inch slotted base, a twisted wire handle and dyed fall colored accents. The workshop meets from 5 to 9 p.m. at Eastern’s Moorefield center.

To register, and for more information about specific times and locations, call Lacey Ball, at 434-8000, or toll free: (877) 982-2322.

McCourt has displayed and sold her work at area fairs and exhibitions for many years.

Area residents with little or no computer experience can jump-start their computer knowledge and skills with Amy Crites’ Introduction to Word 2003, a three-session class for beginners.

This Community Connections workshop will meet Tuesday evenings, Oct. 21, 28, and Nov. 4, at Eastern’s Community and Technical College’s Romney access center at Hampshire High School.

To register, and for more information about specific times and locations, call Lacey Ball 434-8000 or toll free: (877) 982-2322.

In the class, learners will explore the basics of Word 2003, including how to create files, folders and documents; to navigate among files and folders and within a document; to select and edit text; and to format paragraphs and change font sizes.

Pariticipants will also learn to create and draw tables with borders, and to navigate between columns and rows. Crites, Eastern’s contracted training manager, will demonstrate setting tabs, inputting headers and footers and using the help desk efficiently. She will also cover creating and using hyperlinks, and previewing a document as a web page.
