A tree grows at Fort Hill

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary John R. Griffin joined Cumberland Mayor Lee Fiedler, teachers and students of Allegany County Public Schools and many other community partners for a celebration of the city’s urban tree canopy expansion efforts on Friday at Fort Hill High School. DNR’s analysis of Cumberland’s existing urban tree canopy and opportunity for expansion was released. Additionally, teachers and students at Fort Hill High School were recognized for their initiative in extablishing a native tree nursery and installing renewable solar energy. Tours of the greenhouse growing native trees and solar panels at Fort Hill High School were available after the press conference and tree planting. Throwing dirt around the American elm tree were, from the left, Bronson Wiley, Kathleen Wilt, Griffin, Fiedler, Samantha Davis and Joy Riddel, all of the students are seniors.
