Spring revue at ACM will spotlight more than 20 dance, vocal numbers

For the Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND - The talents of community dance schools, area individuals and the Allegany College of Maryland Dance Team all will be showcased Thursday in "Stars of Tomorrow" on the college's Cumberland campus.

The dance team-sponsored spring revue promises a program of more than 20 dance and vocal numbers starting at 7 p.m. in the College Center Theatre.

There will be solo and group dances from Lepley Dance Studio, Steppin' Out and King's Company Praise Dance as well as the eight-member college squad.

In addition, individuals from the community and from the ACM student body will give dance and vocal performance in solo, duet and group.

The dance styles of jazz, tap, clogging, ballet and ballroom all will be represented in the evening program.

The spring revue follows a similar event in December, when dance schools and individuals from the community participated in a winter revue that included holiday music and themes.

Based on the response to that event, dance team co-advisers decided to give the troupe's spring revue a community flavor as well.

"Every year, it increases," said Dixie Long, one of the advisers, who added that performance skills for the team, now in its third year, are stronger than ever.

The squad, which performed at several basketball games this past season, is coming off a strong showing in a large regional dance competition in mid-April - a trip made possible by fundraising and sponsor contributions.

The seven members who went to the weekend TAP (Terrie Ann Productions) Performing Arts Competition tied for second place in their age group and won a silver medal.

Admission to the spring revue is by small donation at the door. The funds help defray costs of staging the show. Any remainder will help the team purchase costumes for future performances.

For more information call Long at (301) 784-5261.
