Pittsburgh percussionists kick off Hampshire's Concerts on the Lawn

For the Cumberland Times-News

ROMNEY, W.Va. - Kicking off the Hampshire County Arts Council's 2008 free Summer Concerts on the Lawn series at 5 p.m. on Sunday will be Resonance from Pittsburgh.

The series takes place on the campus of The Potomac Center in Romney, with indoor options if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Resonance is a world fusion ensemble of three percussionists (Subha Das, Dan Meunier and Phil Webster), guitarist Jay Weaver and bass player George Elliott. They use the distinctive sound of the steel drums to draw audiences into their compelling mix of Caribbean jazz and global fusion music.

Trained in the steel band of pan master/father of the steel drum, Ellie Mannette, members of the ensemble have performed and studied on five continents and with such prestigious entities as the Pittsburgh Symphony, Umoja African Arts Ensemble, and the River City Brass Band.

The group's dynamic performances offer listeners the sounds of traditional Caribbean and original fusion music and moments of potent world drumming.

The Potomac Center is wheelchair accessible. The Hampshire County Arts Council welcomes people with disabilities at all of its events.

To request accessibility services to participate, contact (304) 496-8201 or performances@hampshirearts.org in advance. The West Virginia Relay Operator for information on performances is (711) 496-8201.

For more information visit www.HampshireArts.org or call (304) 496-8201.
