Dozens of activities planned Saturday for Frostburg’s fall Arts Walk

FROSTBURG — The fall Frostburg Arts Walk of 2009 will be held Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m in the city’s recently designated Arts & Entertainment District. The A&E District includes the downtown business district and encompasses the Frostburg Museum and parts of Frostburg State University.

There are 35 locations participating in the Arts Walk that will feature music at several downtown locations, a variety of visual art exhibitions, live theater, as well as hands-on art activities with local artist Meggin Bittner on the Arts Bus. Many restaurants and retailers are also offering Arts Walk specials. Some of the activities include:

• Opening reception for “Body Mapping” will be held at the Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery at 7 p.m. on the FSU campus.

• Custom art and design by Tracey Felker, as well as oil paintings by C.J. Moll will be on display at The Goodfellow Agency, 5 E. Main St.

• 12 artists, working in various medias, will be highlighted at the First English Baptist Church, 136 E. Main. Live music, a puppet show and crafts for children.

• Opening reception for a photography exhibition by Marcia Warnick at the Frostburg Museum, Hill and Oak streets.

• Music at the Lyric Building, FSU’s newest space at 20 E. Main, will offer refreshments, live music and Greg Kennedy, the innovative juggler.

• Acoustical Art will be presented by the Chorus of the Potomac and the Tri-State Youth Orchestra at Armstrong Insurance Agency, 21 S. Water St.

• The Star Gallery at the General Art Store, 19 E. Main, will feature the photography exhibition “Flowers — Photos from the Allegheny & Laurel Highlands Trails” by Lisa Sheirer.

• Visit with guest artist Sherri Loomis, who creates shimmering glass mosaics and custom jewelry at Spectrum Design Services, 9 E. Main.

• Mountain City Traditional Arts, 25 E. Main, will hold artist demonstrations and old-time bluegrass performances.

• The Roots Music Series presents mandolin virtuoso Johnny Staats and the Delivery Boys at the Frostburg Palace Theatre, 31 E. Main St. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door, beginning at 7:30 p.m. while supplies last.

• Used book sale, sponsored by Soroptimist International of Frostburg, offers expanded children’s and arts and entertainment collections at City Place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 12:30 to 3 p.m.

• Photography by Robin Vereen, Susan Stewart and Richard Sloop Jr. will be exhibited at Harris-Elliott-MacKay Insurance Agency, 83 E. Main.

• Cultural Events Series presents country star Sara Evans in concert at 8 p.m. in the PE Center Main Arena on the FSU campus. Tickets are available through the Frostburg State University/Cultural Events Series Box Office at (301) 687-3137.

While several of the performance events are ticketed, most of the Arts Walk activities are free and open to everyone. The Allegany County Tourism Trolley will be in operation with free shuttle service during the event, which is sponsored by the Mountain City Coffeehouse and Creamery.
