Sara Evans bringing far-flung fans to Frostburg

FROSTBURG — There’s nothing typical about Sara Evans, and that can be said for her legions of fans, too. When country music singing sensation Sara Evans takes the stage at Frostburg State University’s Cordts PE Center on Saturday, fans from as far away as Massachusetts, Kansas and Texas will be in the audience. Presented by the Cultural Events Series Concerts, the concert starts at 8 p.m.

Evans has dominated country radio airwaves with her many hit singles and attracted new fans with her spirited turn on the third season of “Dancing With the Stars.” Her drive, talent and determination have placed her in an elite class of artists who transcend musical genres to become a household name.

A multiple Country Music Association (CMA) award winner, Evans was named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in 2006. Her video for “Low” from the movie “Billy Graham: The Early Years” was recently nominated for a Gospel Music Channel Music Video Award. She has earned numerous No. 1 hits, two of which she co-wrote, including “Born to Fly,” “No Place That Far,” “Suds in the Bucket” and “A Real Fine Place to Start,” which spent two weeks at the top of the country charts. Of the five albums Evans has released, her second set, “No Place That Far,” has been certified gold; 2001’s “Born to Fly” is double-platinum and 2003’s “Restless” as well as 2005’s “Real Fine Place” are both platinum.

“We, of course, knew that Sara is a phenomenal talent, both as a singer and as a song writer,” saidd Mary Jane Plummer, director of FSU’s Cultural Events Series. “We are thrilled that her concert here at Frostburg is bringing in so many new faces to our region.” While the majority of tickets purchased have been in the tri-state region and throughout the entire state of Maryland, tickets have been purchased from fans as far away as Ohio, Virginia, Kansas, Florida, Texas and Massachusetts.

Tickets for the concert are $38 for advance reserved floor seats and $25 for advance reserved bleachers seats. Tickets for all seating are an additional $10 beginning on Saturday. Group rate tickets are also available. Tickets can be ordered by calling (301) 687-3137 or 1-866-849-9237, or by visiting ces.frostburg.edu.

The Cultural Events Series is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive. An agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development, MSAC provides financial support and technical assistance to nonprofit organizations, units of government, colleges and universities for arts activities. Funding for the Maryland State Arts Council is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency that believes a great nation deserves great art.

The event is sponsored in part by the Allegany Arts Council with funds from the Maryland State Arts Council. Media for the concert is sponsored by radio station WFRB.

FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. To request accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office, call (301) 687-4102 or use a Voice Relay Operator at (800) 735-2258.
