Embassy presenting singalong screening of ‘Hans Christian Andersen’

Cumberland — CUMBERLAND — In celebration of the music of Frank Loesser, New Embassy Theatre will present a singalong screening of “Hans Christian Andersen,” the popular Hollywood movie musical starring Danny Kaye, for six shows over two weekends.

Beginning Friday through July 17, patrons can bring their children to enjoy the stories made famous by Andersen, who was also a famous paper silhouette maker, and sing along with favorite time-honored tunes. Songs like “Thumbelina,” “The Ugly Duckling” and “Inchworm,” as well as “Wonderful Copenhagen” and “I’m Hans Christian Andersen” will be taught in a brief warmup session before each matinee or early twilight screening.

Host Karl Glocker will show patrons how to follow the bouncing ball as they watch and sing to the film on the Embassy’s new screen, providing a bridge between live performance and the new film capacity, a kind of visual karaoke for the audience to participate in.

“We have had such a great response over the 12 years from people of all ages at our staged movie singalongs, at peak attendance with everything from “Grease” and “Wizard of Oz” to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and it is frankly a blast,” said Mark Baker, Embassy artistic director. “It’s also a good rainy day alternative to outdoor family fun, or beating the heat in air conditioned comfort for a couple of hours.”

Snacks and refreshments will be available from the lobby’s Passport Cafe. The Embassy is located between Liberty and Mechanic Streets at 49 Baltimore Street in Cumberland Town Centre. Low-cost ticket prices and group discounts are available by calling (301) 722-4692, or on the website at newembassy.org. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays.
