A benefit yard and bake sale will be held Saturday, April 26, beginning at 8 a.m. at Bohrer's Fruit Market, state Route 29 N, Slanesville, W.Va.

The sale is open to the public and proceeds will go to Sandy (Malcolm) Hyson, who has lost her hearing and will have surgery for a Cochlear Hearing Implant at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

ABATE of Western Maryland Inc. will hold a benefit poker run Saturday, April 26. Registration will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cresaptown Eagles and the run will end at the Old Route 51 Saloon.

The registration fee includes food and entertainment following the run.

The event is open to the public and all proceeds from the ride will benefit David Gorgol, an 18-year-old cancer patient.

The Rolling Mill Neighborhood Association will hold its fourth annual Greater Cumberland Anti-Drug Festival Saturday, April 26, from noon to 5 p.m. in Queen City Center's Bachman's parking lot and the Queen City Chick-Fil-A parking lot.

Jim Corley will be the master of ceremonies for the event. Entertainment is lined up throughout the day and all community groups are welcome to participate. Local vendors are also welcome, with the exception of food and drinks.

The festival is made possible by tobacco restitution funds provided by the Allegany County Health Department.

The festival began in 2004, in an effort to combat the increase in drug use. The event now serves as an information outlet for all community groups, but particularly those who are taking an active role or who support the movement to prevent drug use in our community.

Hospice of the Panhandle will hold an old-fashioned buckwheat and pancake dinner and auction Saturday, April 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Romney Fire Hall. The dinner will include buckwheats, pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy and other homemade items.

An auction will follow, under the direction of Jimmy See and Floyd Kessel, auctioneers. Door prizes will be given away.

Entertainment will include the Time Travelers and the Chorus of the Potomac Barbershop Singers.

The event is open to the public and proceeds benefit Hospice of the Panhandle.

Daniel Weatherholt, a music major at Frostburg State University and the organist and choirmaster at St. John's Episcopal Church will present his senior recital Sunday, April 27, at 4 p.m. at St. John's, 52 Broadway, Frostburg. Weatherholt will perform on one of the newest organs in Western Maryland.

The recital will include works by John Blow, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Joan DeVee Dixon, David Cherwien, Fred Bock and Emma Lou Diemer.

Beth Holler Page will give a program on the history, traditions and changing trends in garden design in the Casselman Valley Monday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Folk Meeting House, Springs Road, Springs, Pa.

Page has worked for the Springs Historical Society, Somerset Historical Center, Meyersdale Library and as a museum specialist in the Smithsonian Institute's Archives of American Gardens. Page resides in Gettysburg, Pa., and is a contributor for the upcoming "Pioneers of American Landscape Design" Volume II.

The Hampshire County Sheriff's Office will hold a special parent presentation on "Prescription and Over-the Counter Drugs...What You Need to Know as a Parent" Tuesday, April 29, at 6 p.m. at Romney Middle School. The class is free and open to the public.

The class will be taught by Cpl. Jamie E. Carter, Hampshire County D.A.R.E. officer. The training will focus on parents and what they can do to guide their child into making healthy decisions. The presentation is not appropriate for children.

The WMHS Regional Cancer Center will host a Look Good...Feel Better program Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m. The free program is designed for women undergoing treatment for cancer and teaches them how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of their treatments.

During the group session, specially trained cosmetologists will demonstrate how to conceal hair loss with wigs, turbans and scarves and how to deal with skin problems and other side effects commonly associated with chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Each participant will receive a free makeover and a make-up kit appropriate for her skin tone.

The program is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Western Maryland Health System. It does not interfere with the patient's medical treatment or replace professional medical advice. The program does not promote any cosmetic product line or manufacturer.
