Georgie L. Appel [Cumberland]
CUMBERLAND - Georgie Leone Appel, 91, of Cumberland, died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at The Lions Center, surrounded by her children.
Born March 5, 1917 in Hazen, she was the daughter of the late John Bruce and Flora Myrtle (Welsh) McFarland.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leo Frederick Appel; two sons, George "Fred" Appel and Gary L. Appel; two brothers, Bradford McFarland and John B. McFarland Sr.; one sister, Flora Angela McFarland; three grandchildren, Randall Bruce Appel, Todd Andrew Appel and Melissa Maddy; one great grandson, Ethan Appel; one great-great grandson, Robert Christopher Appel; and a son-in-law, Galen McGregor.
Mrs. Appel had worked at the Celanese Corporation and American Canning, Baltimore. She was a housewife and mother of nine children.
Mrs. Appel attended Lighthouse of Hope Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her three sons, John W. Appel and wife Judy, Harold Appel and wife Jeanie and Leo S. Appel and friend Debbie Clayton, all of Cumberland; four daughters, Ina Rae Poling and husband Ken, LaVale, Myrtle Elaine Gay and husband Charles, Jefferson, Ga., Carolyn Jean Meagher and husband Carl, Cumberland and Patricia Maddy and husband Charley, LaVale; three daughters-in-law, Dona Jean Appel, Rawlings, Jean Appel, Cumberland and Shirley Appel, Cumberland; one sister, Jessie Sipes, Cumberland; one sister-in-law, Waneta McFarland, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; 28 grandchildren, Gary Lee Appel, Frederick "Scott" Appel, Steven Appel, Mark Appel, Kirk Appel, Gary Lamar Appel Jr., Nancy Plummer, Jeff Appel, Jennifer McCullough, Wendy Appel, Lloyd Appel, Cameron Appel, Tim McGregor, Tammy Nau, Tracey Whorton, Charles Gay, Todd Appel, Nicholle Appel, Craig Appel, Lisa Bowers, Renee Deremer, Bryan Appel, Carl Meagher II, Amy Calligan, Rebecca Whetzel, Laura Appel, Ian Maddy and Dr. Eric Maddy; 41 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Lighthouse of Hope Assembly of God Church, 11507 Moss Ave., Cumberland, on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Nau officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Lee Appel, Tim McGregor, Charles Gay, Jeff Appel, Craig Appel and Ian Maddy.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lighthouse of Hope Assembly of God Church, 11507 Moss Ave., Cumberland, MD 21502.
