Good Counsel, ND, McNamara, Seton Keough BWGIT winners

CUMBERLAND - Three Good Counsel players finished in double-figure scoring, and five other players were within a bucket of joining them as Bishop Walsh dropped its opening game of the 14th annual Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational Tournament, 99-18, to the Falcons, of Wheaton.

Kyleen Armstrong scored a game-high 17 points using the help of three, three-point shots. Armstrong would finish with a double-double by adding 11 rebounds. Kelsey Murphy scored 13 points for the Falcons, and Kayla Loughner, who has committed to Longwood University, finished with 11 points.

Sarian Snyder and Shanel Harrison each scored nine points, while Katie Sherhin, Simone Lyles and Daniella Poss each scored eight points for Good Counsel, the No. 5 team in the Washington Post poll. Poss also finished with 11 rebounds.

Taylor Butts led the Spartans with eight rebounds and four points.

Good Counsel built a 25-7 lead over the Spartans by the close of the first quarter, and then held BW to just two points in the second quarter to take a 42-9 lead by halftime. The Falcons put together a 29-3 third quarter to head into the fourth quarter with a 99-18 lead.

Notre Dame, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, defeated Holy Cross in Thursday's third game.

Azania Stewart, a 6-foot-4 senior headed to Florida, and Mia Nickson, committed to Boston College, both had double-doubles in the win. Stewart finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Nickson had 11 rebounds and 10 points. Kristin Coles contributed 11 points.

Three players were in double figures for Holy Cross, with Shantice Simmons and Leah Henry each scoring 11, and Akilah Bethel adding 10.



McNamara 72
St. Frances 62


Bishop McNamara, the No. 4 team in the Washington Post, beat St. Frances, the top team in the Baltimore Sun, in the tourney opener.

Ebony Edwards had 16 points and six rebounds, and Kayla Nwachukwu had 11 points and eight rebounds in the win. Shatyra Hawks tied the best scoring performance of the opening night with 22 points. She also had seven steals and five rebounds. Candace Green posted a double-double with 16 rebounds and 15 points.



Seton Keough 58
G'town Visitation 38


The late game saw the No. 2 team in the Sun poll, Seton Keough, beat Georgetown Visitation behind a 22-point, five-rebound game from Ayana Lee. Arika Alman added 14 points. Nicole Krusen scored 14 points for Georgetown.

Today's games begin at 2:45 p.m. in the consolation semifinals when Bishop Walsh (4-23) faces St. Frances (24-4). At 4:15 p.m., Holy Cross (16-9) will meet Georgetown Visitation.

Bishop McNamara (24-8) will square off with Good Counsel (29-3) in the championship semifinals at 5:45 p.m., with Notre Dame (25-2) facing Seton Keough (28-4) at 7:15 p.m.
