Notre Dame repeats as BWGIT Champions

For the Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND - Defending Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational Tournament champion Notre Dame used hustle, timely shooting, and tenacious defense to keep Bishop McNamara at arm's length and successfully defend their BWGIT championship 62-41 Saturday evening at Bishop Walsh School.

In the 4th quarter, Bishop McNamara chipped away at the lead and closed in within six points. At that time, Notre Dame hit two three-pointers to double the lead and never allowed the game to get any closer.

Notre Dame proved they deserved their national ranking with well rounded scoring and aggressive defense throughout the whole game proved to be the difference.

Morgan Wrightson scored 13 points and Mia Nickson chipped in with 10 to lead Notre Dame. Bishop McNamara had balanced scoring from nine different players and the defense kept the game from being a blowout.

Seton Keough 72
Good Counsel 54

Seton Keough built a substantial lead by halftime and continued with a good offense and solid defense in the second half to come away with an impressive win over a very solid Good Counsel team.

Seton Keough was led by Asya Bussie's 29 points and Arika Ullman and BJ Williams added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Sorian Snyder was the leading scorer for Good Counsel with 15 points.

Holy Cross 80
Saint Frances 62

Holy Cross broke open what had been a close game for three quarters. Solid defense and taking care of business on offense kept the pressure on the Saint Frances team. Then, Holy Cross took an overwhelming lead to secure the game.

Led by Shantice Simmons' 24 points, Lia Henry's 15 and Tyonna Williams' 10 points. Holy Cross ended the BWGIT with a strong all-around game.

Saint Frances made a close game of it for three quarters but came up short at the end. There were strong performances by Kandice Green's 27 points and Shatyra Hawkes' 12.

Georgetown 82
Bishop Walsh 31

First-time tournament participant Georgetown Visitation made a good showing on day three of the tournament. They had three players score in double figures. Nicole Krusen scored 18, Coleen Hamm scored 14 and Kristen Haley dropped in 11. Nicole Krusen tied the tournament record for three-point shots with 12.

Bishop Walsh was led by Tricia Geiger's 12 points and she finished the tournament with seven three-point shots made.
