League champion Allegany places four on All-City team

CUMBERLAND - Jenna Mathews, DeTonia DeGross, Elizabeth Getty and Katie Getty of league champion Allegany head this year's All-City girls basketball team, selected by the head coaches of the three City teams.
Also named to the first team were Becky Miller of Fort Hill and Tricia Geiger of Bishop Walsh.
Receiving honorable mention were Brianna Twigg of Allegany and Cassie Donahue and Lindsey Fisher of Fort Hill.
Allegany won the league championship with a 4-0 record, and finished 24-3 overall and City, Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference, West Region champions, and Class 1A state runner-up.
Fort Hill and Bishop Walsh split their two league games and tied for second place with 1-3 records.
Mathews, the league scoring champion, was the only player to average 10 points per game in league play. Thirteen players averaged 6 or more per game.
* Mathews, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, won league scoring honors by making 14 field goals and seven free throws for 40 points and a 10.0 average. She also was the league's top foul shooter, making 7 of 8 tries for 87.5 percent, and was second in three-point goals with five.
For the season, she averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds per game.
* DeGross, a 5-foot-2 junior guard, averaged 7 points per game in league play.
A strong all-around player, DeGross averaged 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and four assists over the 27-game season.
* Elizabeth Getty, a 5-foot-11 senior forward, averaged 7 points per game in the four league games. She was also fifth in the league in foul shooting, making 12 of 18 for 66.6 percent.
For the season, she averagd 7.2 points and five rebounds per game.
* Katie Getty, a 6-foot senior forward, averaged 5.8 points per game in the four league games.
For the season, she averaged 5.4 points and six rebounds per game. She blocked 40 shots, the fifth-highest single-season mark in school history.
* Miller, a 6-foot-2 senior, was runnerup in the City in scoring and foul shooting. She scored 37 points in the four games for a 9.2 average, and converted 7 of 9 free throws for 77.7 percent.
For the 22-game season, Miller averaged 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Sentinels.
* Geiger, a senior at Bishop Walsh, led the league with seven three-point goals in the four City games. She averaged 7.2 points per game.
For the 29-game season, she averaged 10.4 points and made 48 three-point goals, both team highs and among the top marks in the area.
