WILEY FORD, W.Va. — Herman Alfred Cook, 71, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., presently residing in Oakland, passed away Friday, May 22, 2009, at Dennett Road Manor in Oakland.

Born April 1, 1938, in Wiley Ford, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Maggie Mae (Strawderman) Cook. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary L. Cook; three brothers, Oliver Cook, Charles Cook and Robert “Sonny” Cook, and two sisters, Evelyn Thrasher and Sylvia Flanagan.

Mr. Cook was a retired truck driver for Crites Transfer after 42 years of service. He was a member of the New Day Baptist Church, Fort Ashby, and Second Baptist Church, Cumberland. He was an avid bowler and was the former caretaker for Abe Cemetery.

Surviving are his children, Rose M. Fugitt, of Middletown, Va., Tracy Sweitzer and husband Larry, of Oakland and William "Bill" Ammons and wife Linda, of Fort Ashby; grandchildren, Susan Miller, Scarlett Campbell and husband John, Lillian Ammons, Barbara Hicks and husband Shane, Diane Ammons, Laura Ammons, Cherish Hart and Destiny Cook; twenty-one great-grandchildren; special niece, Pearl “Peggy” Cook Shockey; and two special nephews, Ed Cook and wife Freda, and Steven Cook and wife Janie.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Sunday from noon to 2 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Merdith Shryock officiating.

Interment will be in Abe Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, MD 21502, to defray the cost of the funeral expenses.
