BW to play in Altoona tournament

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Bishop Walsh Spartans will face Central, of Martinsburg, Pa., in their opening round game in the Dean Patterson Curve Classic, a three-day high school baseball tournament that begins Friday.

All games in the tournament will be played at Blair County Ballpark, home of the Altoona Curve, the Pittsburgh Pirates Class AA Eastern League affiliate.

BW will be the first team outside of Pennsylvania to compete in the event, now in its sixth year.

Highlighting the eight-team field are two-time defending tournament champion Altoona, and defending Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA state champ Punxsutawney. They play at 5:30 on Friday in the final quarterfinal of the day.

Friday's lineup pits Bishop Carroll against Central Cambria at 10 a.m., Clearfield against Hollidaysburg at 12:30, Bishop Walsh against Central at 3, and Altoona against Punxsutawney at 5:30.

Quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The championship game is Sunday at 1 o'clock.

A consolation round, played on Saturday, guarantees each team of at least two games.

The tournament is sponsored by Dean Patterson Chevrolet/Cadillac, Altoona.
