No. 5 Allegany shuts out Bishop Walsh, 4-0

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND - Cody Ellsworth did just about everything Wednesday afternoon at Al Martin Field, where the fifth-ranked Campers shut out Bishop Walsh 4-0 to move to the top of the Cumberland City League standings.

Ellsworth took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and settled for a two-hitter with nine strikeouts, and also led the Allegany offense by knocking in three of the four runs with a pair of doubles.

The victory moves Allegany to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the league. Bishop Walsh fell to 6-8 and 2-1.

Ellsworth ripped two doubles, Cody Jefferys doubled and singled and Sean Collette singled twice to lead a nine-hit attack for Allegany.

Zac Hare and Neal Eshleman singled to account for Bishop Walsh's hits.

Allegany grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Collette singled, stole second and scored on Ellsworth's double down the left field line.

An RBI single by Jefferys in the third made it 2-0, and it remained a two-run game until the sixth when Jefferys doubled and Collete singled ahead of a two-run double by Ellsworth, again down the left field line.

Allegany center fielder Brennan Connelley made a running catch at the fence in center field to rob Chandler Tomlinson of a hit with two runners on in the first inning.

Hare broke up Ellsworth's no-hit bid with a single in the sixth. Ellsworth walked only two.

Chandler Tomlinson absorbed the loss, scattering nine hits, strikeout out six and not walking a batter.

Allegany plays at top-ranked Northern today. Bishop Walsh faces Central (Pa.) on Friday, at 3 p.m., in the Dean Patterson Curve Classic at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona, Pa. The eight-team tournament continues Saturday and Sunday.
