ACCIDENT - Trey Beasom pitched a complete game and hit a grand slam home run to lead top-ranked Northern over fifth-ranked Allegany in Thursday's Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference contest at Northern.
The win comes a day after Northern suffered its only loss of the season, an 8-4 setback at Mountain Ridge on Wednesday.
Dan Warnick singled and had an RBI double for Northern, while Matt Sisler singled twice, with Kyle Gillum and Jeff Smith both doubling, Smith's bringing in two runs in the fourth inning.
Allegany was held to five hits, all singles by five different players.
In the third inning to break a scoreless tie, Northern's Warnick had a two-out single, went to second on a passed ball, then scored on a single by Sisler to put the Huskies ahead 1-0. Allegany came back in the fourth, however, when John Carpenter drew a one-out walk and went to second on a single by J.D. Hook. Matt Leasure was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before Chris Wilson brought in Carpenter on the fielder's choice to tie the score.
In the Northern fourth, the Huskies put three on the board as Beasom was hit by a pitch and went to second on a sacrifice. After Justin Rosenberger was hit by a pitch, Smith, with two outs, doubled home two runs with Warnick following with a double to score Smith.
In the five-run Northern sixth, Beasom capped the inning with his two-out bases-loaded homer to provide himself with more cushion in the form of the 9-1 lead.
Beasom gave up just one run in the complete-game effort, giving up five hits, striking out seven, hitting three batters and walking four.
"He had some baserunners, but I thought he did a nice job gutting it out early and getting better as it went on," said Northern head coach Phil Carr. "He got out of a lot of jams.
"This was a nice win for us to bounce back after (Wednesday's) loss to beat a good Allegany team. We had a couple of good defensive plays, too. Jeffrey Smith had a great play at second base in the fifth inning."
Allegany had runners on first and second with two outs and the score at 4-1 in the fifth when Carpenter hit a grounder up the middle. Smith dove to grab the ball, however, and threw Carpenter out at first to end the inning.
"That probably makes it 4-3, 4-2 for sure, because I thought if it got in the gap, the kid at first scores for sure," said Carr.
Northern (12-1 overall, 9-1 AMAC) will host Mountain Ridge Monday at 4:30 p.m. Allegany (6-5, 5-3) will host Bishop Walsh Tuesday at 4 p.m.
