Beasom, Northern get by Southern

OAKLAND - Trey Beasom worked a complete game, and escaped danger in the sixth and seventh innings to lead top-ranked Northern to a 5-4 win over Southern Monday evening at Southern High School.
Beasom finished with seven strikeouts, but walked five and allowed five hits. Up two runs in the eighth inning, Beasom allowed one run to score, but got a fly ball from the Rams No. 4 hitter to end the threat.
The Huskies had five hits of their own, with all of them singles. Jeff Smith hit two of them and had an RBI on one, and Ben Diehl singled and scored.
No. 5 Southern was led by Jordan Pacella's double, single and RBI. Nick Tressler drove in one run with two singles, and Jason Ashby finished with an RBI and one single.
The Huskies scored first with a run in the top of the second inning, but Southern countered with two in the home half. Northern took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning, and scored its final run in the sixth.
The Rams scored their third run in the sixth, and got the one run in the seventh before being retired.
Northern improves to 16-1 overall and 10-1 in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference. The Huskies host Fort Hill today at 4:30. Southern (9-6, 6-6 AMAC) will play on Wednesday at Bishop Walsh.
