W.Va. champs seek World title

Keyser Senior League team plays Tennessee in Viera, Fla., today

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

VIERA, Fla. — The Keyser Senior League Baseball team takes another step toward the World Series when it takes the field Friday in Viera, Fla., in the Southeast Region Tournament to play Tennessee in the first game of a weekend full of action.

The West Virginia team finished the regular season a perfect 12-0, and worked its way to the state championship by posting a 7-1 mark in the playoffs. Keyser placed second in the District VI Tournament by beating host Martinsburg to earn a spot in the state tourney, and then went through the state play to beat South Charleston, 9-3, in the finals.

It is the first time Keyser has had a baseball team go this far, but the team that started out with 12 players and is down to 10 is looking to advance to the national tournament.

After playing Tennessee at 1 p.m. on Friday, it will face South Carolina at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. Based on their play in those three pool games, the team has a chance to play for a shot at the national tournament in Bangor, Maine.
