Fort Hill beats Alco

Fort Hill wins share of City title

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

CRESAPTOWN - Destiny James and Olivia Stanley doubled, and top-ranked Fort Hill made the most of five hits in beating second-ranked Allegany, 5-4, and clinching at least a share of the City League championship Tuesday at Carl Belt Field.

Shari Beavers struck out nine and did not walk a batter in a complete-game victory that moved the Sentinels to 9-1 overall, 3-0 in the City, and 5-1 in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic League. Allegany fell to 8-2 overall, 0-1 in the City, and 7-1 in the AMAC.

Fort Hill, outhit 9-5, never trailed and was aided by four Allegany errors and seven bases on balls.

The Sentinels went ahead 2-0 in the third on a two-run single by Cierra Miller.

Allegany tied it in the bottom of the fourth when Jenna Mathews and Bethany Landis singled, and Katie Alkire followed with a two-run double.

A three-run fifth put Fort Hill on top to stay. The inning included two walks, a two-run double by Stanley, and an error.

Mathews belted a solo homer in the sixth to draw Alco to within 5-3.

The Campers rallied in the seventh when Hayley Stankan singled and scored on a Hilary Lyons double. But Lyons was stranded at third when the Sentinels got the final out.

Alkire absorbed the loss, pitching six innings and striking out eight.

Mathews finished with a homer and single, Lyons had a double and single and Landis two singles for the Campers.

Fort Hill plays at Northern and Allegany plays Bishop Walsh at Cavanaugh Field on Thursday.
