Jenna Delaney knocked in seven runs, hitting two singles, a double and a home run — the home run ending the game in the fifth inning on the 10-run rule — all in four at-bats as the Mountain Ridge Miners, the top-ranked softball team in the Times-News poll, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Maryland Class 1A West Region playoffs with a 12-2 win over Southern Saturday at Glendening Park.
Kelsey Robertson turned in another big performance on the mound, giving up just three first-inning hits, hitting a batter and striking out seven Southern batters.
Danielle McGinnis singled twice for the Miners, knocking in two and scoring three runs. Carrie Bean scored three runs, singling and knocking in two runs.
For Southern, Alyssa Dick doubled in both of Southern’s runs in the first inning, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead before the Miners answered with two in the bottom half. Robertson did not allow a baserunner after the first inning as the Miners added three in the second, six in the fourth, and one in the fifth on Delaney’s game-ending home run.
Southern completes the season at 7-10, while Mountain Ridge, now 13-3, will play Monday, 4:30 p.m., at Poolesville in West Region quarterfinal round.
