CUMBERLAND — Kyle Rhodes scored the go-ahead goal while Andrew Siemann scored two goals, including the one that would ice the match as the Bishop Walsh Spartans opened the season with a 5-3 win over Frankfort Monday at Brother Stephen F. Paul Spartan Stadium in high school boys soccer action.
In a back-and-forth first half, Siemann got the Spartans on the board with a goal assisted by Ian Stanley at 37:08. The Falcons, however, came back to tie the game on an unassisted goal by Tom Hughes.
The Spartans bounced back ahead at 27:05 when Dylan Dunn scored unassisted, but the Falcons came right back to tie at 18:46 when Logan Holshey scored on an assist by Hughes. Once again, Bishop Walsh would go back ahead when Matt Kelly scored unassisted at 8:54, and once again, Frankfort would tie the score as Sripadh Sharma scored unassisted at 2:45.
The Spartans put the game away in the second half, however, as Rhodes put them up, 4-3, at 34:43 on an assist by Kelly. Then Siemann scored unassisted at 8:56 to ice the game for BW.
“We’re real young,” said BW assistant coach Joe Rowan. “We start five sophomores, and the defensive changes we made at halftime seemed to work. They took advantage of our mistakes in the first half, but that’s not taking a thing away from Frankfort. They are a scrappy team.”
Bishop Walsh outshot Frankfort, 14-7, while Frankfort had six corner kicks to BW’s five. Aaron O’Rourke had a save for Bishop Walsh, while Brandon Kimbel had two. Andy Hughes had seven saves for Frankfort.
Bishop Walsh (1-0) will play Wednesday at Hampshire with the varsity game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the junior varsity game following.
In the junior varsity game, Bishop Walsh defeated Frankfort, 4-2. Conner Lin, Anthony Hawkins, Josh Squires and Isaac Strauss scored the goals for the Spartans. Squires and Peter Wolodkin had assists.
Frankfort’s Kyle Seaman scored two goals, while Derek Phillips and Tyler Detrick had assists.
Frankfort (0-2) will visit Pendleton County Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
