Dolly runs Patriots over Steelers, 44-6

CUMBERLAND — Cody Dolly ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns on offense and had 14 tackles on defense to lead the Personal Best/Hartley’s Pizza Patriots to a 44-6 win over the Keyser Steelers in the CAYFL Little Super Bowl Sunday at Greenway Avenue Stadium.

Dolly was named the game’s most valuable player after the Patriots won the league championship for the second time in three seasons.

The Patriots led by just 8-6 after one quarter, but scored 36 unanswered points in rolling to the victory.

Dolly scored first on a 5-yard run, with Michael Wright booting the conversion for an 8-0 lead.

The Steelers answered when Javin Duryea scored on a 6-yard run. The Patriots stayed on top, 8-6, when Devin Shreve blocked the extra point.

Dolly had a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and, after another Wright kick, the Patriots led 16-6 at the half.

Shreve, on a 3-yard run, and Dolly, on a 15-yarder, scored in the third quarter.

Dekarri Darr had a 10-yard run and Devin Robinette an 8-yard scamper to complete the scoring in the fourth.

The Patriots big offensive day was keyed by the line play of Wright, Preston Bryant, Jeff Weadon, Ryan Smith, Brennan Carlin and James Hebert. As a result, Dolly ran 18 times for 200 yards, and Shreve had 12 carries for 90 yards.

Shreve had 15 tackles, Dolly 14 and Bryant and John Harris nine to lead the Patriots defense. Shreve, Dolly and Josh Roberts recovered fumbles.

For Keyser, Danny Fife ran 13 times for 74 yards and Duryea had six carries for 45 yards. Wes Nelson led the defense with eight tackles and Josh Coffman had five. Hunter Kasmier and Blake Ravenscroft had fumble recoveries.

The Patriots, one of three teams to go 7-1 during the regular season, were the top-seeded team in the playoffs and finished 10-1. The Steelers ended up 9-2, with their only losses being to the Patriots.

The Patriots will play in the Maryland State Youth League Playoffs in December in Columbia. The championship game of the tournament will be played at M&T Bank Ravens Stadium in Baltimore.

The CAYFL recognized award winners following the game. They were:

• League Memorial Award: Wes Nelson, Keyser Steelers

• Top Lineman: Hunter Flanagan, Ridgeley Rams

• Division II MVP: Coy Ozias, Oakland Rams.

• Regular-season champions: Personal Best/Hartley’s Patriots.

• Super Bowl queen: Joanna Norris.

• Super Bowl winning coach: Pat Amezcua, Patriots; Shawn Harper, Scott Twigg, assistant coaches.

• Super Bowl MVP: Cody Dolly, Patriots.

All-star game planned

The CAYFL all-star game will be played Sunday, Nov. 15, at a site yet to be announced.

All-Stars from the Patriots, Braddock, Northern and Bishop Walsh will play against all-stars from Keyser, Ridgeley, Oakland and the Miners.
