CONCORD, N.C. — Sam Hornish Jr. has won the Sprint Showdown to earn a spot in NASCAR’s All-Star race.

It’s the second consecutive year Hornish has raced his way into the $1 million race. He finished second a year ago to earn one of the two transfer spots.

Jamie McMurray finished second to earn the other transfer position.

The annual all-star race ended too late to be included in this edition.

Mayfield denies taking illegal drugs

CONCORD, N.C. — Jeremy Mayfield denied he used illegal drugs, won’t go to rehabilitation and will consider legal action to rescind his indefinite suspension.

The Sprint Cup driver claimed NASCAR hasn’t told him what he tested positive for, leading to his suspension last weekend.

As J.J. Yeley drove his No. 41 car to a 22nd-place finish at the preliminary event before the All-Star race, Mayfield said he took a legal prescription drug to treat allergies, but wouldn’t name the drug.
