Many of the area bowling leagues took the week off, however, Joe Buff took the area’s lead with a 733/277 outing at Wilson Lanes. Clay Corbin was next at that center with 726/259, and Al Ale had a big 290 game in his 652 set.
At The Bowler, Derrick Bridges was highest with 724/264 in the Wednesday Night Men’s League. Mike Metts followed with 704/268. Dave Yates was close with 700/277. Gary Lindner in The Tuesday Strikers League had a 277 game in his 640 set.
Mike Brobst was highest at White Oak Lanes with 717/263 in the Wednesday Industrial League, and was also highest in the Tri-State Sport League, scoring 663/268. No surprise there. Gary A Ullery’s 289 game and 697 set was next high (Industrial League).
Mel Humberson’s 664/226 was on top of Par-Matt’s list of highs. Ed Glotfelty was next with 627/246.
Susie Lotz bowled 566/207 at The Bowler for the top ladies score reported for the week followed by Sharon Gray’s 564/224.
Janice Mercer was highest of the ladies at White Oak Lanes bowling 559/200. Betty Gable was next scoring 556/201.
At Wilson Lanes, Sherry Lupton’s 552/197 was the top ladies score, followed by Janine Buff’s 549/192.
B.J. Riggleman and Janet Tichnell both rolled 514 sets and were Par-Matt’s top ladies for the week.
Glenn Bell rolled a big 279 game and 662 set at The Bowler to take top senior honors for the week. Darrell Boatman’s 661 was close behind. Dick Gallagher was Par-Matt’s top senior for the week rolling 539/188.
Only two centers reported youth bowling results. Ashman Dodd scored 646/253 at Wilson Lanes ,and Amanda Greene rolled 592/215. At White Oak Lanes, Scottie Brown was highest with 566/205. Caitlin Weems scored 516/189.
The 42nd annual Youth Championship Tournament is currently being held this weekend (and next weekend) at Wilson Lanes in Romney, W.Va. Squads start at noon, 2:30 and 5 p.m. on Sunday and also next Saturday and Sunday. We expect a number of high scores with our future bowling stars in action.
The recent announcement of changes by USBC concerning Sport Leagues should spark a lot of interest to many bowlers. The same oil patterns used on the PBA Tour will be required patterns to be used in sanctioned Sport Leagues.
Unlike golf, the average bowler will be able to directly compare his/her scoring to the pros. In some cases using the same bowling lanes that are used on the tour. I’m sure that one of the results will bring a greater respect for the tour regulars who average 230 plus on those conditions.
Few golfers can afford to play the courses that the golf pros use and even then the cup placement for their tournaments make direct comparison impossible.
Another favorable result is that bowlers interested in seeking a bowling career will be able to get some feel for his/her qualifications before giving it serious thought. It should be a great stepping stone at the local level to the pro circuit.
Good luck bowling and have fun striking out!
