Motorcycle course Aug. 8

CUMBERLAND — Allegany College of Maryland’s Center for Continuing Education is offering a Basic Rider Course for beginning motorcycle riders Aug. 8 through 10.

This 17-hour course is designed for anyone with little or no riding experience who is able to ride a bicycle. The class meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 8 and 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10 in the Welding/Auto Building.

Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration-certified instructors conduct the training, and participants receive approximately 10 hours of riding on a training motorcycle.

Riders who pass the course may have their license issued for an additional fee.

Council to host symposium

CUMBERLAND — The Council of the Alleghenies 15th symposium will be held Aug. 9, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Cumberland Country Club. Sherrie Noonan, watershed project coordinator with the Western Maryland Resource Conservation and Development Council, will speak on coal mining and problems of acid mine drainage and remediation and Jill Craig, digitization librarian at the Western Maryland Regional Library in Hagerstown, will speak on the historical resources available at the library’s Web site.

Following lunch, Carrie Blough and Gail Smith from the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset will discuss clothing of the 18th and 19th centuries.
